Buy strong luggage that is as light as possible. Although most luggage has wheels, there will still be times when you have to pick it up. Don't forget the airline weight limitations, too. Some brands are amazingly light for their size and strength.

Is the bag waterproof? Your bags will inevitably wind up being rained upon. Having water soak your clothes and possessions is no fun. Having your luggage grow mold is even worse.
